What does cubscouting cost?
As youth activities go, cubscouting is a bargain! There are several fixed costs and fees that recur every year. Some optional activities  and events carry additional costs. The most important ones are listed below.
Once-a-year fees
Membership of Boys Scouts of America is covered by the (re)chartering fee, due once a year in November/December. The basic fee is $17 per boy; optionally, you can subscribe to the monthly Boys Life magazine, for an additional $12.
Den dues cover costs incurred by the pack for use of the Camp Spirit facilities as well as expenses made by den leaders for den meeting supplies etc. Den dues are $30 for a full scouting year (September-June), and are pro-rated to $15 when a scout joins after January 1st. They are collected in September, or when joining the pack.
Uniforms and supplies
First-time cost for a basic uniform (shirt and insignia, neckerchief and slide, hat, belt, socks) is about $60. Some items are reusable in following years (shirt as long as it fits, belt, socks), others will require updating with each rank advancement (neckerchief, hat). You can find up-to-date pricing on these items at the online scout store.
Your cub scout will also need to purchase the handbook for his rank at the beginning of every year - at a cost of $4-$7.
Optional expenses
The pack covers expenses for advancement items such as rank and activity badges, progress towards ranks emblems, and arrow points, from its general budget (covered by popcorn sales). Expenses for optional advancement items such as belt loops and pins are taken out of the scout’s cub account. They run between $1 and $2 per loop/pin. Families are requested to ensure the cub account is adequately funded before requesting these items.
Overnight camping activities
The scouting year offers several opportunities for the cubs and their families to participate in overnight camping activities, at Camp Spirit or farther afoot. These include the Fall Cub Event at Akelaland (about $15), Jambo once every two years in Kutztown, Mother-Son Camp-in (about $5), and Father-Son Camp-out (about $7).
Summer camp
Many of the cubs in Pack 72 attend one or more day camps, or resident camp. Fees run from about $100 for a week of day camp, to about $280 for a week at resident camp. Families can apply for need-based camperships through the Pack 72 Committee and through Minsi Trails, to cover some or all of these expenses.
