Fish galore
By MrBroekhuis | July 13, 2008
That was a marvellous spot Mr. Ledeboer picked out for the 2008 Pack Summer Fishing Event! The pond at Schochary Ridge Nursery near New Tripoli may have been small, but it was teaming with fish. About fifteen scouts attended, and all caught some fish (some caught a lot!). There were family members too, with some first-time fisherkids. A big thanks to Mr. Ledeboer for organizing the event, and for all the goodies, too!

Resident camp 2008
By MrBroekhuis | July 5, 2008
Yahoo! Another resident camp come and gone, with lots of fun and excitement. Our boys spent their week traversing Sherwood Forest, rescuing Maid Marian, watching banana catapulting, making ropes and tying knots, and hunting for salamanders and toads. The weather was marvellous for the first four days, and a bit of rain on the last day completed the camp experience.
This year brought 29 scouts, ranking from brand-new Tigers to seasoned Webelos II, to camp. Just one short of the challenge goal set by Mr. McPeek and Mr. Martin, but in an amazing (and amusing) display of sportsmanship, these fearless leaders decided to follow through on their dare to shave their heads. First it was Mr. Martin’s turn, who went through a Friar Tuck stage before losing all the hair on his head.
Next was Mr. McPeek, who first went to mohawk, and then to bowling ball. We’ll all miss him after he moves to Texas this summer.
Do you see the shirt Mr. McPeek is wearing? That’s the 2008 Pack 72 resident camp shirt. All campers and leaders got one, and wore it almost every day!
Another highlight was Monday’s water carnival, featuring the bellyflop contest in which Pack 72’s first-time leaders competed against contestants from other packs. We weren’t surprised that the best belly-reddening, water-smacking performance came from two of our own leaders:

Mr. Olenick and Mr. Hamm were selected to compete in the final flop-off, where they demonstrated side by side just how big a splash Pack 72 can make. Their chests, rosy-colored from two magnificent flops, were the object of much admiration when they returned to shore.
Of course there were plenty of the usual activities. Lots of fishing, including several early-early-morning ventures out to the lake, yielded all kinds of fish: sunnies, big bass, perch, crappies, and a few branches, too.
In shooting sports, the bullseyes just kept on coming, both in archery and in BB shooting. Many boys earned their belt loops and pins, and everyone who tried qualified for the BB badge. There was slingshot and action archery, too!

Thanks to all the leaders who helped make this camp-out loads of fun. Let’s really get more than thirty scouts next year!

Father-son camp-out 2008
By MrBroekhuis | June 17, 2008
The weather forecasts warned of lots of thunderstorming and rainfall, but that didn’t deter twenty or so scouts and dads from convening at Camp Spirit for yet another installment of the annual Father-Son campout - very appropriately held on Father’s Day weekend this year. Luckily, the bad weather stayed away (we won’t count the few drips that descended around bedtime - they were nothing compared to the all-out super soaker battle that had taken place earlier).
The afternoon brought fun with bottle rockets. The best part was when Mr. Garbacik exploded a couple of them.Â

And the food was once again magnificent - especially the melt-in-your-mouth steaks. The meat was grilled over a swinging grate masterfully tended (and dangerously swung) by Mr. Cope.

As night fell, light sticks were passed out. Lots of twirling makes for cool camera art!
Besides some minor snoring issues, everybody survived the campout. Sunday morning brought Scouting for breakfast and an inspirational service. Thanks again to Mr. Garbacik for an funtastic event!
